Ukraine is lying while explaining suspension of its chairmanship in CIS – Russia

20 March 2014, 20:29 -- Kiev's reasons for suspending its chairmanship in the CIS did not correspond to reality, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday. On Thursday the new authorities in Kiev decided to quit the CIS, the organization of former Soviet Republics.

'We understand Ukraine's decision to terminate its chairmanship in the CIS taking into account the protracted political crisis and difficult socio-economic situation in the country. At the same time, the reasoning behind this decision provided by the Ukrainian party does not correspond to reality,' a report of the Russian Foreign Ministry posted on its website reads.

'In its statements, Kiev refers to an alleged refusal of states members of the CIS to discuss the situation in this country. We have already said: it is not so. Let's remind: it is the Ukrainian side that refused to participate in the meeting of Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Minsk aimed at discussing the situation in Ukraine, which was scheduled for March 14,' the Russian Foreign Ministry states.

The statement made by the new Ukrainian administration on its intention to leave the CIS is a propaganda campaign that contradicts the economic interests of Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in the State Duma on Thursday.

The new authorities in Kiev have decided to quit the CIS, the organization of former Soviet Republics, the security chief said.

Ukraine is also ready to impose a visa regime with Russia and is to ask the UN to turn Crimea into a demilitarized zone.

Ukraine introduces visa regime with Russia, puts army on full combat alert

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has been ordered to introduce visa regulations with Russia, Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Secretary Andriy Parubiy said following a council meeting.

'The Foreign Minister has been ordered to introduce visa regulations with Russia,' Parubiy said at a briefing on Wednesday, reported Reuters and Interfax.

The Foreign Ministry should work out the procedure, according to which 'entry to Ukraine [for Russian citizens] can be allowed by international passports only,' Parubiy said.

'The order has been given to put into effect this decision by the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council as quickly as possible,' Parubiy said.

He also said that the Security Service of Ukraine, Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Armed Forces of Ukraine were instructed to put army on full alert .

He added that Kiev was developing a plan for withdrawing its soldiers and their families from Crimea.

'We are developing a plan that would enable us not only to withdraw servicemen, but also members of their families in Crimea, so that they could be quickly and efficiently moved to mainland Ukraine,' Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council chief Andriy Parubiy told a televised press conference.
