
Fatal incident in Simferopol 'provocation' - Russia's ambassador to NATO
19 March 2014, 16:00 -- Russia has discussed with senior NATO military officials the tragic incident which killed a Ukrainian soldier in Simferopol and a Crimean self-defense fighter, Russian Ambassador to NATO Alexander Grushko told Interfax in Brussels. 'We have informed them that we see this incident as a provocation. The Russian troops were not involved in it, there was no storming of the Ukrainian military base as claimed by the authorities in Kiev. The incident is now being investigated, those guilty will not walk away from the responsibility,' the official said on Wednesday.
He was commenting on the concern expressed by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen with the Ukrainian soldier's death in Simferopol in his March 18 statement over Crimea.
Sniper that killed two seized in Crimea
Crimean police say they have nabbed the sniper that gunned down yesterday two people in the republic's capital city of Simferopol. This is according to the Vesti FM radio station. The marksman is a 17-year-old Ukrainian from the country's western region of Lvov and member of the nationalist Right Sector.
Two people died Tuesday in the shooting that Crimean police called a possible provocation. The sniper reportedly took position in a building under construction and fired in two direction, targeting a Simferopol military base, as well as a group of Crimean self-defense troops nearby.
Two men killed from sniper rifle in Simferopol
Two people were killed, while two others were wounded from a sniper rifle in Simferopol on Tuesday, according to the Interior Ministry of Crimea. The Interior Ministry of Crimea specified that those killed are a self-defence unit soldier and a Ukrainian military serviceman. Another self-defence unit member and another serviceman were wounded.
'According to preliminary reports, the shots were fired from one place in two directions. Someone fired from the window of a partially constructed building in the immediate vicinity of a military installation at self-defence unit soldiers checking up on a report that armed people had entered that building. The other shots were fired at the nearby Ukrainian military installation,' the Crimean Interior Ministry press release points out.
The Ministry does not rule out that the shooting was a pre-planned provocation.
Simferopol shooting carried out from same spot - ministry
One self-defense fighter has been killed and two people injured as a result of a shooting near Kubanskaya Street in Simferopol, according to the Crimean news agency which cited a source in the Crimean Interior Ministry.
'The shooting was carried out from the same spot in two directions: against the self-defense fighters who were checking a warning about the presence of armed people in an uncompleted building, and in the direction of Ukrainian military base located nearby,' the source said.
The self-defense forces today received a warning about the discovery of a group of armed people in a partially inhabited building near Kubanskaya Street. Fire was opened against the fighters as they were investigating the warning.
'As a result, one fighter has been killed and yet another injured. A man from the nearby Ukrainian military base has also sustained an injury. The shooting in both directions was carried out from the same spot,' the ministry source said.
The Interior Ministry has not ruled out it was a deliberate provocation aimed at sowing nervousness and compounding the situation in the city on the day when Crimea signed a reunification agreement with Russia.
