Sevastopol protesters storm Ukraine Navy HQ in Crimea

Anti-Ukrainian protesters who rallied this morning outside the Ukrainian naval headquarters in the Russian-majority port city of Sevastopol in Crimea have razed the fence and broke into the military compound, media report.

Ukrainian troops stationed at the base were alerted to the attack and attempted to block the crowd of enraged civilians but were overrun.

The activists have taken posts across the territory of the compound demanding that Ukraine pull its military out of the republic, which has recently voted by a landslide to re-join Russia.

Media say some people on both sides are sporadically engaging in heated debates that escalate into struggles. An ambulance has been already called for, they report.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian flags at the base have been replaced by Russian banners to the cheers of the local people.
