Ukrainian Navy commander calls for reconciliation between Ukraine and Crimea

16 March 2014, 17:07 -- Commander of the Ukrainian Navy Rear Admiral Sergei Gaiduk believes that it's time for reconciliation between Ukraine and Crimea.

'We've been through a stage protest and military confrontation threats. It's now time for reconciliation, for politicians and diplomats to do their job. I am sure that no one wants a new wave of riots, violence or the threat of armed banditry to our wives, children and parents,' Gaiduk said in a statement posted on the website of the Ukrainian Navy media outlet on Sunday.

Russia has managed to find a format that enabled to avoid armed clashes and human casualties, he said.

'Political differences can only be resolved through negotiations,' Gaiduk said as he appealed to politicians' sense of reason.

Meanwhile, voters in Crimea went to polls on Sunday to vote on the region's future. There are two questions on the ballot sheets: 'Do you want Crimea to re-unite with the Russian Federation?' and 'Do you support the reinstatement of the 1992 Crimean Constitution with Crimea remaining part of Ukraine?'

Each of the questions requires more than a half of the votes cast to be approved.
