Establishment of Ukrainian National Guard may be perceived as distrust in law enforcement officers
16 March 2014, 20:17 -- The decision to create the National Guard in Ukraine may be perceived as distrust in the current heads of law enforcement agencies, sources in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Defense said. The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov held a 'pretty tough' conversation with Acting President Alexander Turchinov and secretary of the National Security Council and Defense Andrei Parubiya, a high-ranking source in the Interior Ministry said.
'From what we know, Avakov considered the decision to establish the National Guard as distrust to himself personally,' the official who wished to remain anonymous said.
'The decision to establish the National Guard was a huge stress for active members of the Interior Ministry. Judging by their reaction in social networks and forums, they are openly worried that soon the National Guard will take the functions of the law enforcement, while they will be booted out,' the source said.
The way Defense Minister Igor Tenyukh was speaking of the matter, tells us that the army is also nervous, the source in the Defense Ministry said. 'This is due to the fear that the escalation of the situation in the east of Ukraine will require the National Guard to get small arms from army depots... Taking into account the large number of members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the eastern and south-eastern regions, any attempt of the newly minted guardsmen to establish order with weapons may lead to insubordination of the military units in eastern Ukraine, and thus to the beginning of the Civil War,' the source said.
