West's sanctions would cut both ways - Pushkov

9 March 2014, 21:07 -- The West's sanctions against Russia over Ukraine would backfire, said chairman of the State Duma's International Affairs Committee Alexei Pushkov.

'Sanctions against Russia would cut both ways. France is expecting to earn $1.3 billion from building two Mistral ships. Will this gain be sacrificed for the sake of an unreliable government in Kyiv?' Pushkov wrote on Twitter on Sunday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on March 7 that Moscow would not leave the European Union's decision to introduce sanctions against Russian citizens without a reaction, if such sanctions are implemented.

'Russia does not recognize the language of sanctions and threats. But if they are implemented, they will not be left without a reaction,' the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a commentary.

'At this delicate moment, as the world community is doing all it can to find a way out of the Ukrainian crisis, the European Union has assumed an extremely nonconstructive position refusing to cooperate with Russia on issues of great importance for our citizens and business community, including liberalization of the visa regime and the conclusion of a new basic agreement,' the Foreign Ministry said.

'A great deal of work has been done jointly on these tracks and noticeable progress has been achieved in tackling disputable issues. If Brussels thinks that Russia is interested more than the European Union in a successful outcome of this work, it is mistaken,' the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
