7,000 people march for autonomy of Ukraine's eastern Kharkov region

9 March 2014, 00:41 -- About 7,000 people took part in Saturday's meeting and march in Ukraine's eastern city of Kharkov.The people carried Russian and Ukrainian flags demanding resignation of the authorities in Kiev and a referendum on a number of issues.

In particular, the protesters are pushing for the Kharkov Region to become an autonomous territory. In addition, they are insisting on the Russian language to be granted the status of a second state language.

Local residents also find the appointment of Igor Baluta the governor of the Kharkov Region by the Kievan authorities to be illegal.

At the same time, the participants in the meeting said that they would not make attempts to break into government agencies and stressed in every possibly way that they, unlike the protesters in Kiev, had no weapons, clubs or petrol bombs. The protesters repeatedly chanted 'Berkut!'

During the action of protest about 2,000 people passed along the main Sumskaya Street to the building of the city council where they also voiced their protest.
