Ukraine's new government may start repressions against their opponents
7 March 2014, 22:12 -- Ukraine's new authorities may start repressions against residents of the Crimean Peninsula and Ukraine's eastern regions, the majority of whom do not support the new government, Press Secretary of Russia's President Dmitry Peskov says.
"It can be imagined quite well what the initiators of the revolution in Kiev would do with their opponents if they start repressions against them," Mr. Peskov said in a popular Russian TV show "Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov". "I believe that very likely, the new authorities will not confine themselves to only putting pressure on their opponents in the Crimea. I am concerned that many of these opponents may lose their posts if they have any."
"It should go without saying that all the citizens of Ukraine, both in the country's east or west, should have equal rights," Dmitry Peskov continued. "However, Ukraine's new authorities are absolutely depriving eastern Ukrainians and Crimeans from the rights for self-determination and for defending their dignity and security. Now, residents of Crimea and eastern Ukraine are in panic and calling on other countries – first of all, on Russia – for help. Russia fully shares their concerns about the new Ukrainian government's policy."
Following Western logic, any gov't installed by extremists recognizable - Kremlin
President Vladimir Putin's spokesman has ridiculed the recognition of Ukraine's current government by the West.
'If one follows the logic of the West, from now on any government that has been brought in on the bayonets of armed extremists may be recognized,' Dmitry Peskov said in a program on Russia's Rossiya 1 television on Friday.
'Unfortunately, we can have no other interpretation of the position taken by our Western partners.'
