Sevastopol residents protest appointment by Kiev of new city police chief
Sevastopol residents are holding a rally outside the local police department to protest against the appointment by Kiev on Friday of a new Sevastopol police chief, the ITAR-TASS correspondent reports from Sevastopol.
Ukraine's new authorities fired the current Sevastopol police department chief, Alexander Poddubov, yesterday and appointed an alternative.
Taking part in the rally are members of the Russian Bloc Crimean party, as well as members of other organizations. The protesters are determined to prevent the new chief from entering the police department. Poddubov, meanwhile, is already in his office. Several members of a voluntary public order squad are helping protect the police department building.
Poddubov told those present that he was not about to quit and asked them to leave.
