US National Security Advisor Susan Rice has warned Russia against sending military troops into Ukraine.

'That would be a grave mistake. It's not in the interests of Ukraine or of Russia or of Europe or the United States to see a country split. It's in nobody's interest to see violence return and the situation escalates,' Rice said.

She made the remarks while speaking on the NBC program "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

'There is not an inherent contradiction ... between a Ukraine that has longstanding historic and cultural ties to Russia and a modern Ukraine that wants to integrate more closely with Europe. This need not be mutually exclusive,' she added while answering question about a possible scenario by Moscow to send its military forces to the crisis-hit country.

When David Gregory, the program's host, asked Rice whether the Russian president looks the Eastern European country in a cold-war context she replied the " he (Vladimir Putin) may".

'But if he does, that's a pretty dated perspective that doesn't reflect where the people of Ukraine are coming from." Rice explained.

She made remarks after Ukrainian parliament ousted president Viktor Yanukovych and named Oleksandr Turchynov, the legislature's newly-elected speaker, as interim president.

Ukraine has been gripped by protests since November when the government decided to shelve a trade deal with the European Union.
