Tymoshenko trial raises serious concerns - EC delegation head

RIA Novosti

17:03 08/08/2011 KIEV, August 8 (RIA Novosti) - The trial and arrest on Friday of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is a cause for "great concern," the head of a European Commission delegation to Ukraine said on Monday.

Tymoshenko is being tried on abuse of office charges in connection with a gas deal signed with Russia in 2009. She was taken into custody on Friday during a court hearing. She says the charges against her are politically motivated.

"This court case, like all the other cases against former Ukrainian officials, causes great concern," delegation head Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira said.

A Kiev district court rejected a release petition on Monday filed on behalf of Tymoshenko.
