Taipei, Sept. 9 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Friday paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who has died at the age of 96.

"I extend my deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the United Kingdom & the Commonwealth on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," Tsai said on social media Friday.

"Taiwan remembers and celebrates her life of leadership and service, which set an example for people around the world," she added.

Britain's longest-reigning monarch "died peacefully" at Balmoral Castle near Aberdeenshire, Scotland Thursday afternoon (local time), Royal officials said in a brief statement.

Presidential Office spokesman Xavier Chang (張惇涵) said in a press statement that the death of the queen was a "great loss" to the United Kingdom and the international community.

Chang said Taiwan and the U.K. were "of one heart and mind" and would remember the queen's "life-long contributions to the world's peace and prosperity."

During her seven decades of reign, the U.K. remained the backbone of the global democratic alliance, Chang said, adding that Taiwan would continue working with the U.K. for their common values in the face of authoritarian expansion.

In a separate statement issued Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said it had expressed the government's condolences to the queen's son Charles, who became King Charles III after the passing of the queen, the Royal family, the U.K. government and the Commonwealth through its representative office in London.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) also had a phone call with the British representative to Taiwan John Dennis to express condolences, MOFA said.

The queen was placed under "medical supervision" Thursday, and her family rushed to Scotland, where she had spent much of her summer, to be by her side, U.K. media reported.

The queen's 73-year-old son Charles, formerly the Prince of Wales, became King Charles III and the head of states of 14 other realms including Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
