ANKARA (Sputnik) – The ruling Turkish Justice and Development Party's (AKP) will continue its efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Turkey-Kurdish crisis, but would fight with Kurdish terrorists, Deputy Chairman of the AKP Mevlut Cavusoglu said Saturday.
"Unfortunately, in the past, the policy in relation to Kurds had a discriminatory nature. Our party had abandoned this policy and implemented important reforms on behalf of our citizens of Kurdish origin… We will continue this activity," Cavusoglu told RIA Novosti.
Cavusoglu said that the party initiated large-scale construction of infrastructure in the regions inhabited by Kurds and took steps to increase the presence of the Kurdish language in the state media.
He added, however, that Turkey would continue its struggle against the militants from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Ankara considers a terrorist organization.
Tensions in Turkey escalated in mid-summer when the country launched a military campaign against PKK militants in northern Iraq, after the group claimed responsibility for the murders of two Turkish police officers who they say had aligned themselves with the Islamic State jihadist group.
