MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Turkish police allegedly prevented the military from bringing rockets to the nation's capital Ankara on the night of the coup last week, local media reported.

Twenty trucks loaded with the Kasirga rockets were stopped on the road to Ankara after leaving the base of the Turkish 58th Artillery Brigade late on July 15, the Turkish public broadcaster NTV claimed.

The vehicles were reportedly accompanied by 80 soldiers, two lieutenant colonels and a general.

Kasirga rockets carry 330-pound warheads and are a component of the long-range T-300 multibarrel rocket launch systems, according to the channel.

The failed coup triggered a massive crackdown on the military, judiciary and media in Turkey and prompted the government to declare a three-month state of emergency, giving it greater powers to conduct purges.
