Taipei, Nov. 1 (CNA) A joint ceremony was held Saturday at CSBC Corp., Taiwan's Kaohsiung shipyard for the commissioning of the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) patrol vessel "Taipei" and the christening of its high-latitude offshore patrol vessel "Siraya."

During the event, CSBC said it has built vessels for the CGA since a patrol vessel development project launched in 2018 and is continuing to improve its technology and expand into unmanned vessels, in line with the government's indigenous shipbuilding and resilient defense policies.

The Chiayi-class "Taipei" is the fourth 4,000-ton patrol vessel delivered under the project and will be assigned to a coast guard unit in central Taiwan to enhance patrol capabilities, the company said.

The "Taipei" is equipped with three high-pressure water cannons, a 20mm remote-controlled weapon system developed by National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology. It also features a helipad and a medical center, including a negative-pressure area, allowing it to carry out humanitarian missions.

In addition, it said the CGA high-latitude offshore patrol vessel is built with all-steel hulls and has a full-load displacement of around 5,000 tons, significantly increasing both tonnage and endurance.

Two variants are planned: a maritime reconnaissance version equipped with unmanned aerial vehicles, and a transport-and-supply version featuring two multifunctional cargo containers, as well as a multipurpose boat and a special operations assault boat, capable of supporting rescue and logistical missions.

The ships are equipped with three water cannons, two of which can discharge foam, and 20mm remote-controlled weapon systems linked to onboard fire-control systems for law enforcement patrol operations.

The CGA has ordered a total of six high-latitude offshore patrol vessels, including the "Siraya," from CSBC.

The Kaohsiung ceremony was attended by President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), CSBC Chairman Chen Jeng-horng (陳政宏) and several officials.
