The State Council Taiwan Affairs Office on Friday denounced the recent sentencing of Taiwan's retired Lieutenant General Gao Anguo, saying the island's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is abusing the judiciary to persecute pro-reunification and "patriotic" forces on the island.
In response to a media question about the DPP authorities, citing an alleged violation of the so-called "national security law," convicted retired Lieutenant General Gao Anguo of attempted organization for the mainland and sentenced him to seven and half years in prison, the office's spokesperson Chen Binhua said on Friday that this is yet another act of judicial abuse and political persecution by the DPP authorities against pro-reunification and patriotic forces on the island.
"We strongly condemn it," said the spokesperson.
The DPP keeps suppressing political dissents, and in particular is arbitrarily persecuting organizations and individuals who oppose "Taiwan independence" and advocate reunification, Chen said.
"These actions stem from the DPP authorities' nature of supporting 'independence' and serve its narrow partisan interests. We call on all sectors of Taiwan society to see the true nature of this case and to jointly oppose the DPP's abuse of power and persecution of patriots," the spokesperson said.
"We warn the relevant institutions and personnel on the island: those who place themselves on the wrong side of popular sentiment and historical justice, and who act as instruments or henchmen of 'Taiwan independence' separatists, will inevitably face historical reckoning and legal punishment," Chen said.
