Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te's remarks disparaging China's V-Day commemorations while taking veiled swipes at the mainland's social system has betrayed any sense of national standing, defied justice and conscience, gravely wounded the feelings of compatriots on both sides of the Straits, and laid bare the ugly face and sinister nature of "Taiwan independence" separatists, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Thursday, after Lai claimed on his social media on Wednesday that "Taiwan does not use guns to remember peace".
"September 3 is the Victory Day of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, a day of pride for all Chinese at home and abroad. While the entire nation solemnly marked the 80th anniversary of this victory, Lai Ching-te indulged in reckless rhetoric, whitewashing aggression and inciting confrontation," Chen said.
"He completely disregarded the heroic struggle of Chinese people everywhere to save the nation from peril, the blood and sacrifice that secured national independence and liberation, and the immense contribution of the Chinese people to human civilization and world peace," Chen continued.
Taiwan is part of China, and Taiwan compatriots are members of the Chinese nation. For national liberation and Taiwan's recovery, Chinese people including compatriots from Taiwan rose up bravely against Japanese fascism, fighting for the survival of the nation, for national rejuvenation, and for human justice, Chen said.
"Their resistance culminated in modern China's first complete victory against foreign aggression, after which Taiwan was restored to the motherland. Our commemoration of the 80th anniversary is meant to remember history, honor the martyrs, cherish peace, and open up the future. We hope that Taiwan compatriots will firmly stand on the right side of history, on the side of human progress, carry forward patriotic traditions, uphold the national cause, and safeguard the fruits of victory," the spokesperson said.
He also called upon Taiwan compatriots to oppose "Taiwan independence," and work with the Chinese mainland toward reunification and national rejuvenation.
Chen solemnly warned Lai and his ilk: Any attempt to distort the history of the War of Resistance or World War II will not succeed. Any act that challenges the postwar international order and the conscience of humanity is doomed to fail. Any scheme to oppose the entire Chinese people and split the country will lead to self-destruction.
"Justice will prevail, the people will prevail, and national reunification will prevail," Chen concluded.
