Asked to comment on reports from Taiwan media that recent US tariff hikes on Taiwan products have severely hit the island's traditional industries, with official figures showing that by August 15 the number of people forced to take unpaid leave had risen by more than 650 from the end of July to nearly 4,000—91 percent of them in manufacturing sector, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday that the US' "20 percent plus N" compound tariff has turned the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authority's claim of the so-called "best ever" Taiwan-US ties into a laughing stock. Zhu said the DPP's servile acts of "selling out Taiwan to the US" are both shameless and absurd.

Zhu noted that higher US tariffs, combined with the appreciation of the New Taiwan dollar, have dealt the heaviest blow to small and medium-sized enterprises and traditional manufacturing on the island, which support the livelihoods of millions of residents.

Many firms are now struggling with rising costs and shrinking orders, forcing large numbers of workers to take unpaid leave and eroding people's welfare, according to Zhu.

Driven by political motives to "rely on the US to seek independence," the DPP authority has allowed Washington to take whatever it wants while concealing the truth from the public. By going further down the path of "selling out Taiwan" and "destroying Taiwan," the DPP is reaping what it has sown, Zhu said.
