DPP secretary-general submits resignation after legislative recall loss

Taipei, July 28 (CNA) Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary-General Lin Yu-chang (林右昌) said Monday that he has submitted his resignation following the failure of the mass legislative recall campaign backed by his party over the weekend.
In his Facebook account, Lin wrote that he tendered his resignation to President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), who is also DPP chairman, on Sunday.
As the ruling party's secretary-general, Lin said he is responsible for any shortcomings and failure to meet the expectations of both society and party supporters.
He further went on to praise the recall campaign volunteers for their selfless spirit, courage and unwavering commitment to Taiwan.
"What we need least is to make excuses for the outcome, but instead to move forward," Lin said, noting that while there are many challenges, people must continue to defend Taiwan.
His announcement came after all 24 lawmakers of the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) who were up for recall survived the unprecedented votes on Saturday, ensuring that the KMT along with Taiwan People's Party lawmakers will maintain opposition control of the Legislature.
As of press time, President Lai had yet to formally accept Lin's resignation.
