In response to a media inquiry about Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo's remarks that his trip to Taiwan is "ready to bring the relationship to a new level" during a meeting with Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te in Taipei on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said that There is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China. This is a widely recognized consensus of the international community that brooks no challenge.
The DPP authorities' attempt to engage in political manipulation through so-called "diplomatic allies" is nothing but self-deception and a futile act that cannot stop the inevitable trend of China's reunification, Lin said.
At present, 183 countries around the world have established diplomatic relations with China, which fully demonstrates that adhering to the one-China principle is a universal norm, reflects the will of the people, and is an unstoppable trend. Recognizing the one-China principle, developing relations with China, and sharing development opportunities truly serve the fundamental interests of Guatemala and its people, said the spokesperson.
We urge the relevant government to see the big picture, follow the will of the people, and make the right choice as soon as possible, said Lin.
