When asked about the recent incidents of mainland spouses of Taiwan residents facing unfair treatment in the Taiwan island, Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said compatriots from both sides of the Taiwan Straits share the same roots and are one family.
He said that these incidents infringe upon and harm the legal rights and interests of mainland spouses.
Chen said that regarding the "Taiwan independence" agents who persecute mainland spouses, "we will hold them accountable and impose severe penalties according to the law."
He also urged the Taiwan authorities to act fairly and justly, refrain from political manipulation that interferes with normal judicial processes, and effectively safeguard the rights and interests of mainland spouses in Taiwan.
