In response to a media inquiry regarding comments made on Wednesday by the head of Taiwan's external affairs authorities, Lin Chia-lung, who claimed that Taiwan can decide on its own whether it is a country, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated on Thursday that Taiwan has never been a country. She said that such remarks only reveal a certain individual's arrogance and ignorance and constitute a blatant provocation.
Mao emphasized that there is only one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the whole of China. This is a basic norm in international relations and a widely recognized consensus in the international community. Taiwan's future can only be decided by the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people, including compatriots from Taiwan. The reunification of China is inevitable—this is an unstoppable historical trend that no force can stop, said Mao.
