Taipei, Feb. 23 (CNA) President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Sunday called on ruling party lawmakers to view potential policy shifts under U.S. President Donald Trump as an opportunity rather than a challenge.
According to DPP legislative caucus secretary-general Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤), Lai told Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislators that while Trump's return to the White House could bring uncertainty, Taiwan should aim to strengthen its global position and expand its influence.
Lai reassured lawmakers that Taiwan's national security and economic teams are fully prepared to respond to any shifts in U.S. policy, Wu said.
Lai also warned of growing pressure from Beijing, emphasizing that China's threats are escalating. In response, he stressed the importance of a strong national defense and a resilient economy to counter external challenges, Wu added.
Regarding the upcoming legislative session, Lai urged DPP lawmakers to stand firm in defending Taiwan's democracy and sovereignty, Wu said.
