Taipei, Nov. 7 (CNA) Two officers with the Military Intelligence Bureau (MIB) have been indicted on charges of corruption and document forgery after being accused of fraudulently obtaining ten million Taiwan dollars from the agency where they worked, according to the Shilin District Prosecutors' Office.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the prosecutors' office said a female colonel surnamed Su (蘇) and a male lieutenant colonel also surnamed Su have been indicted on suspicion of receiving more than NT$10 million (US$310,000) in working expenses from the bureau in contravention of the Anti-Corruption Act from 2018 until recently.

Prosecutors said they believe the two started in April 2018 to conspire to apply for performance bonuses based on fabricated interactions with a Chinese intelligence operative named "Liang Fan" (梁方).

They also forged multiple pieces of information to support their claims about the network they pretended to have created around Liang and his operations, according to prosecutors.

On June 15, prosecutors and Investigation Bureau agents, searched the MIB and summoned the two for questioning, believing that they had breached relevant laws after checking their bank accounts, cellphones, filtering through receipts and analyzing the fraudulent information they submitted to the MIB, the indictment said.

Although colonel Su denied any wrongdoing and her verbal statements varied markedly with her co-conspirator, prosecutors said the two were indicted because there were strong and compelling evidences showing their fraudulent activities, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors have also recommended the forfeiture of their ill-gotten gains. Meanwhile, the two suspects have been detained and held incommunicado since June, awaiting trial.
