Taipei, Oct. 6 (CNA) Taiwanese business tycoon Terry Gou (郭台銘) said Friday night that he has collected enough of the required signatures he needs to run in the January 2024 presidential election as an independent.

Gou, founder of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., needs the signatures of 289,667, or 5 percent, of eligible voters in the 2020 presidential election by Nov. 2, and have them pass a review by the Central Election Commission (CEC) to be able to get his name on the presidential ballot.

During a temple visit in New Taipei's Banqiao District, Gou thanked everyone for their support, and said that he will continue to push on to get more endorsements before the deadline because "the more the better."

"I will continue to work hard and fight to the end," he said, indicating without elaborating that he has already passed the signature threshold on Wednesday.

His campaign office spokesperson Chen Chia-yi (陳家頤) later told the media that since Gou launched his signature drive on Sept. 20, more than 300,000 signatures have been collected.

According to Chen, the campaign team had remained low-key about it because it wanted to be diligent and not get too carried away like the "tortoise and the hare."

The results of the petitions will be announced by the CEC on Nov. 14.
