Taipei, Sept. 10 (CNA) The Navy said Sunday it has requested NT$616.2 million (US$19.2 million) for new drydock cranes to help strengthen domestic wartime ship repair capacity.

According to the 2024 defense budget recently submitted to the Legislative Yuan, the Navy plans to spend NT$377.7 million in 2025, and NT$377.9 million in 2026 to acquire the cranes.

The Navy, which did not disclose the technical specifications of the purchases, said that the new cranes would allow damaged warships to be repaired more efficiently to better support Taiwan's military.

While the Navy did not say which supplier it would use, an assessment released by the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Industrial Cooperation Program in March 2022 showed that Taiwan may be able to manufacture drydock cranes domestically in the future.

The Navy said Taiwan's naval shipbuilding capacity had progressed significantly in recent years, citing the Yushan and the Tuo Chiang-class corvette as examples.

According to the Navy, more diverse vessels are currently either under production or being launched as part of Taiwan's effort to bolster its wartime readiness.
