Taipei, Sept. 6 (CNA) Taiwan's Military Police is scheduled to debut its newly purchased heavy motorcycles in an upcoming military base opening event later this month, the Military News Agency (MNA) announced on Wednesday.
According to the MNA, the Taipei-based 202nd Military Police Command's Quick Response Company will showcase its new Indian Challenger motorcycles at the Sept. 24 opening of the army base in Hukou Township, Hsinchu County.
The MNA report said the company will hold a round of motorcycle performances during the opening event, which is expected to be attended by tens of thousands of civilian participants.
A military source told CNA that the opening of the Hukou Army Base will be an open house, and will feature armaments and display weapon systems, such as tanks, and an armored vehicles exhibition on land, as well as an aerial show by army choppers.
Taiwan's military regularly holds similar military base open-house events to promote national defense awareness among citizens. The last one was held on Aug. 12 at Taichung's Ching Chuan Kang Air Base and attracted nearly 100,000 visitors.
The 202nd Military Police Command's Quick Response Company is the only military unit in Taiwan equipped with heavy motorcycles.
The company previously used 65 aging Japanese-made Yamaha Royal Stars, before the Military Police Command spent NT$65 million (US$2.03 million) on replacing them with U.S.-made Indian Challengers.
The unit took delivery of them in November 2022.
The military police said the motorcycles are highly mobile, explaining that a rider would be able to hold a locally developed Kestrel anti-armor rocket and get to where they need to be much quicker than on other military vehicles.
Unlike many other countries, Taiwan's military police is a separate branch of the armed forces tasked with protecting government leaders from assassination or capture, guarding strategic facilities, and conducting counterintelligence against enemy infiltrators, spies and saboteurs.
