New Taipei, Aug. 24 (CNA) Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. founder Terry Gou (郭台銘) on Thursday hinted he may run to be the new Taiwan president as he rallied support during a temple visit in New Taipei.
During his remarks at the Wugu Shiandi Temple in Tucheng District, Gou said he was not affiliated with any party and asked the people if he could count on their support if he were to run as an independent.
The 2024 Taiwan elections are very important because it's about war or peace, he exclaimed.
Gou proceeded by asking the audience if him becoming president and "working for Taiwan" was a good idea, while suggesting that people should vote for the right candidate rather than the party.
He added that Taiwan needs a leader who is not burdened or influenced by political affiliations and can lead the nation in fulfilling its status as an emerging power in Asia and in the rest of the world.
Asked if this meant he was officially announcing his presidential bid, the business tycoon told reporters in a subsequent press meet that he had been merely surveying the situation.
Gou said there were hidden voters out there that pollsters are missing and it was therefore important for him to find them, understand them and communicate with them face to face.
He said a lot of people have expressed hope that he would run, but added that there would be an announcement when the time is right.
