Taipei, Aug. 17 (CNA) Only 38 percent of the U.S. public support the deployment of American troops to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Thursday.

Reuters said the nationwide online poll, which was conducted online on Aug.14-15, showed that in the event of a Chinese military attack on Taiwan, slightly over 38 percent of respondents backed the deployment of U.S. troops, versus 42 percent who opposed direct U.S. intervention.

The result exposes "the political constraints facing any president seeking U.S. military involvement in a conflict involving China," Reuters said.

Meanwhile, half of respondents said that the U.S. should provide Taiwan with military equipment to stave off a potential Chinese military attack.

In addition, the Reuters poll showed 75 percent of respondents held a negative view of China, while 84 percent viewed Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) "at least slightly unfavorably."

Regarding China's influence on the U.S. presidential election, some 66 percent of respondents said they favored a candidate who "supports additional tariffs on Chinese imports," with another 66 percent agreeing that Washington should make additional preparations to counter the military threat from Beijing.
