Taipei, Aug. 10 (CNA) An examination of an Indigenous Defense Fighter (IDF) jet which discharged flames mid-air during a rehearsal in Taichung Thursday determined that the incident was caused by a defective exhaust nozzle sleeve, the Air Force said.

Based on a preliminary investigation, the malfunctioning component allowed flames to shoot out from the nozzle walls, the Air Force said in a statement.

The examination found that the jet's twin-turbine engine remained intact and identified no foreign object or internal object damage, it added.

The IDF jet will undergo repairs, the Air Force said without further elaborating.

The incident happened during an aerial rehearsal in the morning ahead of an open-air event at Ching Chuan Kang Air Base scheduled for Saturday.

Ground crew at the air base spotted the malfunction and instructed the pilot to land immediately.

According to the Air Force, the pilot responded accordingly and safely landed the aircraft.
