Taipei, Aug. 10 (CNA) A total of 33 Chinese warplanes were detected in Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) during the 24-hour period from 6 a.m. Wednesday, including eight that crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, according to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND).
Among the intruding aircraft, six J-10 and two J-16 fighter jets crossed the median line, while one Y-8 anti-submarine warfare plane and one Y-9 electronic warfare aircraft flew close to the southwestern boundary of the ADIZ before turning back, flight path information released Thursday by the MND showed.
An ADIZ is an area declared by a country to allow it to identify, locate and control approaching foreign aircraft but is not part of territorial airspace as defined by international law.
Meanwhile, six Chinese military vessels were detected in waters around Taiwan during the same 24-hour period, the MND said.
Taiwan's military deployed aircraft, ships, and coastal missile systems in response to the situation, the ministry said.
