Taipei, July 26 (CNA) The annual Wanan air raid drill scheduled for Thursday in central Taiwan has been canceled as the country braces for the impact of Typhoon Doksuri, the Ministry of National Defense said Wednesday.
The cancellation was made after the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) expanded a land warning for the typhoon at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday to include parts of central and southern Taiwan, including Miaoli County, Taichung, Nantou County, Changhua County, Yunlin County as well as Chiayi County and City, the ministry said in a press release.
The 30-minute drill, originally scheduled from 1:30 p.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, was set to involve the sounding of air raid sirens across parts of central Taiwan, in order to test shelter operations and with the aim of raising public awareness of emergency warnings in order to reduce the possibility of casualties and damage if an attack occurs, the ministry said.
Furthermore, the Navy Command Headquarters also released a statement Wednesday saying that it had made a range of preparations, including the deployment of AAV7 amphibious assault vehicles to Tainan's Guantian and Pingtung's Jialutang and Renshou military bases in southern Taiwan for disaster prevention and relief missions.
The underwater operation unit had also prepared rubber boats and pumping equipment, and will fully cooperate with local governments when needed, the statement said.
The Military News Agency also reported that soldiers from the Army's 333rd Mechanized Infantry Brigade had been deployed to Linbian Township in Pingtung Wednesday morning to assist the local disaster prevention effort and to help with typhoon-related preparations.
The 4th Theater of Operations in southern Taiwan had also headed to Liugui, Shanlin and Maolin in Kaohsiung Wednesday morning to assist the local government with preventive evacuation of local residents, according to the report.
