Taipei, July 23 (CNA) The annual Han Kuang military exercises set to kick off Monday for five days will test Taiwan's military backup operations to ensure there would be no interruption in the chain of command in the event of an attack, a source with knowledge of the matter said Sunday.

The exercises will include a simulation of the transfer of air combat command power, in order to test the Air Force backup system and its emergency response capabilities during wartime, the source said.

The drill will focus on a scenario where the command-and-control functions of the Joint Air Operations Center on Toad Mountain in Taipei are impacted after the center comes under attack, which leads to relevant personnel having to move to an alternative location to ensure operations continue, the source said.

The annual exercises will also include a drill staged Tuesday for the first time at Taitung airport, involving F-16V block 20 fighter jets and the C-130H transport aircraft.

On Wednesday, a one-hour anti-takeover operation will be held at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport during which commercial air traffic will be suspended.

The drill is the first such exercise staged at Taoyuan International Airport since it opened in 1979.

In addition, an anti-landing exercise will be held on a beach in New Taipei's Bali District, the Port of Taipei and the mouth of the Tamsui River Thursday.

The Han Kuang exercises, Taiwan's major war games, has been held annually since 1984 in the form of live-fire drills and computerized war games, with the aim of ensuring Taiwan's combat readiness in the face of a Chinese invasion.

This year's tabletop war games phase was staged in May.

During the five-day annual military drills, the Tong Hsing exercises, which aims to ensure reserve forces are adequately trained, will also take place.
