Taipei, June 19 (CNA) The Navy's first 10,000-tonne amphibious transport ship, the Yushan, was commissioned into service Monday at a ceremony in Kaohsiung.

The Taiwan-made Yushan landing platform dock (LPD), a type of naval warship used to transport landing crafts such as amphibious vehicles, was designed for amphibious combat operations during wartime and can be used to transport personnel and supplies in peacetime, Navy Commander Tang Hua (唐華) said during the ceremony.

It can also perform disaster relief and international humanitarian rescue missions in response to natural disasters, Tang said.

Named after Yushan, the highest mountain in East Asia, the Yushan symbolizes the Navy's persistent efforts in pursuing excellence and being at the front line of the country's defense, Tang said.

Su Tzu-yun (蘇紫雲), a research fellow at Taiwan's Institute for National Defense and Security Research, said the innovative design of the new ship bolsters its force projection capabilities and gives it greater flexibility to deliver supplies to outlying islands.

In addition, the Yushan has complete medical facilities, including a negative-pressure isolation ward, that can support needs-based humanitarian aid to countries in Southeast Asia and Oceania, Su said.

The vessel was launched in April 2021, and testing and training missions began shortly after it was delivered to the Navy in October 2022.

With a length of 153 meters and a beam of 23 meters, the Yushan has a displacement of 10,600 tonnes and a range of 7,000 miles and can travel at a speed of up to 22.1 knots (41 kilometers per hour).

It is able to carry several AAV7 amphibious armed personnel carriers and 673 troops, and can be fitted with an MK-75 76mm gun, two MK-15 Phalanx close-in weapons systems, and two TC-2N missile systems that can be loaded with a maximum of 32 TC-2N missiles.

It is the first of four indigenous landing platform docks being built for the Navy by local shipbuilder CSBC Corp., Taiwan.
