Taipei, June 6 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Tuesday outlined a number of achievements in reforming the military during her seven-year presidency at a ceremony held to promote 27 senior military officers.
At the conferral ceremony held at the Ministry of National Defense's Taipei headquarters, Tsai said that since taking office in May 2016, she has launched a series of military reforms to boost the armed forces' readiness to defend national security.
Such efforts include building warplanes and warships at home, reforming the structure of the military, and including female veterans in volunteer reservist training programs for the first time.
These were done to bolster Taiwan military's combat preparedness and resilience, she said.
The president also thanked the promoted officers for their tireless efforts, and urged them to continue to exercise their leadership in their new roles to beef up training and nurture military talent for the nation's armed forces.
"Together let's jointly modernize and professionalize our troops for national security reasons and show the world our determination to safeguard our country," Tsai said.
During the ceremony, five officers were promoted to the rank of two-star general -- either lieutenant general or admiral -- and 22 were promoted to the rank of one-star general -- either major general or vice admiral.
The promotions of senior military personnel in Taiwan used to be carried out twice a year but are now done at monthly events after the Legislature revised related laws in May.
The conferral ceremony, however, is still carried out twice a year, in June and December.
