Taipei, April 18 (CNA) Commander of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy Mei Chia-shu (梅家樹) will take office as chief of the general staff, the top commanding post in Taiwan's military, on May 1, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced on Tuesday.

Vice Chief of General Staff Tang Hua (唐華) will assume the post left vacant by Mei and become Commander of the Navy, the MND said.

Mei will replace Chen Pao-yu (陳寶餘), who is retiring this month, the MND said in a press release.

According to the Act of Military Service for Officers and Non-commissioned Officers of the Armed Forces, Chen reached retirement age for servicemen, 64, last year.

However, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) approved an extension to his service in 2022, making Chen the first chief of the general staff to prolong his duty.

In other positions involved in the latest military reshuffle, Vice Defense Minister in charge of armaments, Wang Hsin-lung (王信龍), will serve as one of the military strategy advisors at the Presidential Office and his incumbent post will be succeeded by Army Commander Hsu Yen-pu (徐衍璞).

Meanwhile, the Army's Vice Commander Chung Shu-ming (鍾樹明) will be promoted to take over from Hsu, the MND said.

All assignments will be effective on May 1, according to the MND.
