Taipei, April 11 (CNA) The number of Taiwanese working in China fell for the eighth consecutive year in 2021, a government report said recently.

According to the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS), 163,000 Taiwanese worked in China in 2021, accounting for 51.1 percent of the 319,000 Taiwanese who worked overseas that year.

The DGBAS considers Taiwan nationals to be working overseas if they stay out of the country for a total of 90 days in one year, with reference to domestic labor and health insurance records.

The number 163,000 represented both a decrease of 76,000 people (19.2 percent) from 2019 and 261,000 people (61.6 percent) from 2011, the DGBAS said.

By comparison, there has been a steady increase in the number of Taiwanese who work in Southeast Asia from 2017 to 2019.

Chiou Jiunn-rong (邱俊榮), an economics professor at National Central University, told CNA that many Taiwanese business people originally based in China relocated to Vietnam, Thailand or Taiwan due to the U.S.- China trade war since 2018.

With China continuing to tightening its political and economic environment, plus the impact of COVID-19, the country has gradually lost its appeal to Taiwanese businesses, Chiou said.

Even though the pandemic has slowed down, it is difficult to reverse such a trend, he said.

Hsin Ping-lung (辛炳隆), associate professor at National Taiwan University's Graduate Institute of National Development, also said the sluggish post-COVID economy in China has played a role in discouraging Taiwanese and other foreign companies from investing.
