Washington, April 4 (CNA) Virgina Governor Glenn Youngkin will visit Taiwan later in April as part of a wider tour to Asia, his office said in a press release Tuesday.
Youngkin, a Republican who has led the state since January 2022, will head his first international trade mission to Taiwan, Japan and South Korea from April 24 to 29, the release said, without specifying when he will be in Taiwan.
According to the statement, Youngkin will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and other government officials, as well as business executives in Taiwan to "further strengthen Virginia's economic and cultural connections."
In the statement, Youngkin was cited as saying that his trip to Asia will "focus on economic development opportunities, our shared priorities and national security."
"Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea represent critical markets that will advance economic growth and prosperity in Virginia," Youngkin said.
Before running for Virginia governor in the 2021 gubernatorial election, Youngkin had served different roles at the private equity firm Carlyle Group for 25 years, including serving as its co-CEO from 2018 to 2020.
