Taoyuan, Feb. 21 (CNA) Taiwan's Army held a media event Tuesday to showcase its new shooting training program that puts more of an emphasis on simulating real battlefield conditions so that soldiers are better prepared for real combat environments.

In a demonstration open to the media held at a Taoyuan Army base, soldiers demonstrated how to fire precisely at targets while in standing, prone, and kneeling positions. Previously, soldiers were only trained to shoot their pistols or rifles in stationary prone positions.

According to the Army, the change was made to simulate real battleground conditions and have trainees switch shooting positions as they would have to in combat and fix their guns if they get jammed.

Trainees are required to run past two obstacles before taking a total of 36 shots from the three different positions at nine targets that are about 50 to 75 meters away within 1 minute and 45 seconds, according to the Army.

To pass the test, soldiers need to hit the targets with six, four and four of the 12 shots taken from each position, the Army said.

Army Major Chang Chia-hua (張家華) of the Army Education, Training and Doctrine Development Command, which devised the new program, said the biggest difference in the new approach was its emphasis on soldiers' fitness and endurance, and their need to stay stable and control their breathing while shooting after being in motion.

The latest change is part of the Taiwan's military's ongoing training reforms to boost their combat readiness as tensions between Taiwan and China remain high.
