Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) will convene a high-level national security meeting on Saturday to discuss matters pertaining to Taiwan's security and economic situation, the Presidential Office said Thursday.

The meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., will focus on the government's strategy and response to the impact of the global economic slowdown on Taiwan's overall economy, manufacturing industry and people's livelihoods, Presidential Office spokesman Xavier Chang (張惇涵) said in a statement.

A press release will be issued shortly after the meeting summarizing its results, according to Chang.

Meanwhile, Chang said that Tsai would participate in a flag-raising ceremony on the morning of Jan. 1, and outline more details from the talks during her New Year address to the nation at 8:30 a.m.

Tsai and Vice President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) will also hand out spring couplets and red envelopes to visitors at the Presidential Office Building later that morning, Chang added.

There has been speculation -- fueled by both ruling and opposition party lawmakers -- that the government could be considering plans to redistribute some of the NT$450 billion (US$14.6 billion) in higher-than-expected tax revenue it recorded this year.

Asked about the possibility earlier on Thursday, acting Finance Minister Juan Ching-hwa (阮清華) refused to confirm or deny it, saying only that "everything is still under discussion."
