London, Nov. 7 (CNA) U.K. Trade Policy Minister Greg Hands will visit Taiwan from Monday to Tuesday for the first in-person government-level U.K.-Taiwan talks held since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hands will co-host the 25th edition of U.K.-Taiwan Trade Talks in Taipei and meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) during his two-day visit, according to a U.K. government press release.
The annual government-level trade talks, first held in 1991, took place online in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.
"I first visited Taiwan 31 years ago in 1991 and it's been fantastic to see the growth of this dynamic, vibrant economy. I'm thrilled to be the first Trade Minister here post-pandemic and to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of trade talks," Hands said in the press release.
"Boosting trade with this vital partner is part of the U.K.'s post-Brexit tilt towards the Indo-Pacific, and closer collaboration will help us future-proof our economy in the decades to come," he added.
During the Trade Talks, the U.K.'s national innovation agency, Innovate UK, will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan on increasing collaboration on technology and innovation, according to the release.
The agreement will include a 5 million pound (NT$182 million) funding commitment through to 2025 and support for U.K. businesses via a bespoke Innovation Program in Taiwan, it said.
Hands will also hold meetings with Vice Premier Shen Jong-chin (沈榮津), Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-Hua (王美花), Minister of Digital Affairs Audrey Tang (唐鳳), National Development Council Minister Kung Ming-hsin (龔明鑫) and Minister without Portfolio John Deng (鄧振中), the leader of the Taiwan side in the trade talks.
