Taipei, Oct. 19 (CNA) Army troops stationed in the offshore Penghu County conducted a live-fire drill early Wednesday morning that simulated the use of cannons and tanks to repel invading Chinese forces.

The drill, a standard monthly exercise, began with the firing of flares using 105mm and 155mm howitzers and 81mm and 120 mm mortars, and the troops also fired 50mm machine guns and M249 squad automatic weapons at simulated enemy forces attacking on a beach.

The drill concluded with M60A3 battle tanks and CM21 armored vehicles firing at the sea in a display of the Army's defensive capabilities. Due to poor weather, however, targets that were originally to be placed at sea for the tanks to shoot at were not used.

Major Hsiao Yo-sheng (蕭又升), the Army's Penghu Defense Command Armored Cavalry Battalion commander who was in charge of Wednesday's drill, said the drill was part of a monthly live-fire exercise to test the troops' combat preparedness.

The drill was held based on a scenario of the Chinese military sending their warplanes and warships toward Penghu after conducting live-fire drills around the main island of Taiwan.
