Taipei, Oct. 9 (CNA) A Canadian cross-party delegation led by member of parliament Judy Sgro arrived in Taiwan on Sunday for a visit during which they will attend National Day celebrations and meet with government leaders, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
The five-member delegation also includes House of Commons members Angelo Iacono, Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay, Richard Martel, and Chris Lewis, MOFA said in a statement.
It is the first Canadian parliamentary delegation to visit Taiwan since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic over two years ago, the ministry said.
The visitors bring well wishes from the Canadian parliament as their arrival comes just as Taiwan is set to celebrate its Oct. 10 National Day, it noted.
MOFA called the visit a demonstration of the Canadian parliament's support for Taiwan amid heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait in the wake of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island in early August, which saw China respond with military drills around Taiwan and increase its military activity in the strait.
According to MOFA, during their stay that will run through Friday, the delegation will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and Vice President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), as well as Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) and Legislative Speaker You Si-kun (游錫堃).
In addition, Sgro, the chair of the Canada-Taiwan parliamentary friendship group and chair of the Standing Committee on International Trade in the House of Commons, will be presented with a diplomatic medal by Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) in recognition of her contributions to promoting Taiwan-Canada relations over the years, MOFA said.
