Taipei, Sept. 24 (CNA) Chen Yu-lin (陳育琳), the deputy director of the Ministry of National Defense's (MND) Political Warfare Bureau, will soon become the first female lieutenant general in the history of the Republic of China (ROC) Army.

Chen will be promoted from major general to lieutenant general on Oct. 1 and be appointed director of the Army Command Headquarters' Political Warfare Department, a military source told CNA on Saturday.

As a result of those moves, Chen will become the first woman to be given the rank of lieutenant general and the first female to lead a political warfare department in an ROC military command headquarters.

The Political Warfare Department is currently headed by Yang An (楊安), who has been tapped to succeed Chien Shih-wei (簡士偉) as director of the MND's Political Warfare Bureau because Chien is scheduled to retire on Oct. 1.

Chen has achieved a number of "firsts" in her military career.

She was the first woman to be responsible for political warfare affairs at a defense command on an outlying island when she served under the Matsu Defense Command, and the first to head an Army corps' political warfare division with the Sixth Army Corps.

She was also the first female director at the MND's Political Warfare Cadres Academy and the first female deputy director of the MND's Political Warfare Bureau.

Including Chen, there are currently four active-duty women holding the rank of major general in the ROC Army.

The other three are Kung Chiung-yu (龔瓊玉), director of the Matsu Defense Command's Department of Political Warfare, Ku Li-tu (辜麗都), director of the Military Police Command's Department of Political Warfare, and Hsiao Jen-chin (蕭人瑾), director of the office of the MND deputy minister for communication, electronics and information.
