Taipei, Sept. 6 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) thanked military personnel stationed on Taiwan's east coast for their response to nearby Chinese live-fire drills held in August, during a visit to Hualien Air Force Base on Tuesday.
During the visit, Tsai also presented members of the Air Force's 5th Tactical Composite Wing with a bonus in celebration of the upcoming three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, which begins this Friday.
Tsai made particular note of the combat readiness missions undertaken by personnel from the 5th Tactical Composite Wing during an encirclement of Taiwan by the People's Liberation Army of China from Aug. 4-15.
The president praised personnel stationed at the base for increasing its overall security force by 63 groups, as well as conducting 126 actions and carrying out 36 air defense sorties to counteract China's show of force, made in response to United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan from Aug. 2-3
Earlier Tuesday, Tsai visited the Huadong Defense Command's Mechanized Infantry Battalion, and inspected Hsiung Feng-class anti-ship missile launching vehicle and Tien Kung-class missile command and control vehicle developed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology.
