Taipei, April 11 (CNA) A visiting parliamentarian delegation from Sweden called for closer economic and trade ties between Sweden and Taiwan and pledged to try to help Taiwan take part in the global arena during a meeting with Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua (王美花).
Boriana Åberg, chief of the Swedish-Taiwanese parliamentarian friendship group and the head of the delegation, told Wang at Monday's meeting that she was looking forward to deepen bilateral economic exchanges and partnerships, a Ministry of Economic Affairs' (MOEA) statement said.
Åberg also said she was willing to do her best to help Taiwan join international organizations, according to the MOEA.
In response, Wang said the support for Taiwan shown by the Swedish delegation will be a major boost to Taiwan's ongoing push to join international organizations.
Meanwhile, the two sides touched on topics related to Taiwan's GDP growth, exports, and the semiconductor, e-vehicle, and green energy sectors, the MOEA statement said.
The delegation members also asked Wang if the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine was affecting Taiwan's industries, economy, and access to rare metals and energy.
Wang responded that state-run energy supplier CPC Corp., Taiwan's natural gas contract with Russia expired at the end of March.
Also, the main source of Taiwan's rare metal imports was Indonesia, she said, adding that the war has had little impact on Taiwan.
Wang, meanwhile, reiterated the government's stance in standing with the group of countries led by the European Union and the United States in opposing the Russian invasion.
The delegation led by Åberg and Charlie Weimers, a member of the European Parliament, arrived in Taiwan on Sunday evening for a five-day-visit.
The group also met with Taiwan's digital minister Audrey Tang (唐鳳) and exchanged views on digital development, disinformation, and digital communication, according to a tweet by Swedish Parliamentarian Alexander Christiansson, a member of the delegation.
