Taipei, March 3 (CNA) Taiwan's top military research unit is expected to soon complete upgrading and expanding its missile factory facilities, significantly increasing its ability to produce locally-developed missile systems, according to the Ministry of National Defense (MND) on Thursday.

According to an MND report sent to lawmakers for budget review, National Chung Shan Institute of Science & Technology (NCSIST) has expanded its missile factory facilities over the past few years and the upgrade is expected to be completed in June.

Since 2018, NCSIST has spent NT$7 billion (US$24.9 million) upgrading a total of 80 missile related facilities. Currently, 50 have completed upgrades with the rest expected to finish work in June, according to the MND report.

With the newly upgraded facilities, NCSIST will boost its annual production capability of Taiwan-made Tien Kung (Sky Bow), Tien Chien (Sky Sword), and Hsiung Feng (Brave Wind) missiles, in the near future, it said.

Currently, the annual production of Hsiung Feng III supersonic anti-ship missiles stands at 20; Sky Sword II or Tien Chien II ship-launched/land-based missiles at 40; Tien-Kung III or Sky Bow III Surface-to-Air Missile Systems at 48 a year, the MND said.

The upgraded facilities will increase annual productions of Hsiung Feng III to 70 a year, Sky Sword II to 150 annually and Sky Bow III to 96, it added.
