Washington, Feb. 7 (CNA) The United States government announced on Monday that it has approved the sale to Taiwan of equipment and services aimed at improving the island's missile defense system for an estimated cost of US$100 million.

This is the second U.S. arms sale to Taiwan since President Joe Biden took office in January last year.

In a statement, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) under the U.S. Department of Defense said it notified Congress of the deal on Monday after it was approved by the State Department.

The package includes equipment and services to support participation in the Patriot International Engineering Services Program (IESP) and Field Surveillance Program (FSP) for five years, including engineering services support, designed to sustain, maintain, and improve the Patriot Air Defense System, the DSCA said.

It also includes missile field surveillance support for legacy (Guidance Enhanced Missile (GEM)) and Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) missiles, designed to ensure the reliability and performance of the Patriot missile, and legacy and PAC-3 missile stockpile reliability testing, to provide quantitative reliability assessments of the deployed missile round, according to the DSCA.

The DSCA said the proposed sale will help sustain Taiwan's missile density and ensure readiness for air operations.

The sale supports Taiwan's continued efforts to modernize its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability, the DSCA said, adding that the sale will help improve the security of Taiwan and assist in maintaining political stability, military balance, economic and progress in the region.
