Brussels, Nov. 2 (CNA) A delegation from the European Parliament departed Tuesday for Taiwan, according to a tweet earlier in the day from Georgios Kyrtsos, a member of the European Parliament taking part in the visit.

The European Parliament's Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes (INGE) decided in October to send a delegation to Taiwan.

The 10-plus member delegation, made up of seven lawmakers and their aides, is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan Wednesday for a multiday visit aimed at exchanging experiences regarding discerning and countering disinformation.

Kyrtsos, a Greek MEP aligned with the European People's Party, tweeted that the delegation had boarded a flight for Taiwan.

Calling it an official visit by INGE, Kyrtsos said they will observe Taiwan's COVID-19 prevention measures while in the country.

Before their departure, the European Parliament told CNA that it had not sent any official delegations to Taiwan prior to the visit by INGE, meaning that the group holds the significance of being the first formal delegation sent by the European Union legislative institution to Taiwan.

In Taipei, asked about the visit Tuesday afternoon, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not confirm that the trip was taking place, saying only that the ministry would brief the media on any further developments.
