Taipei, Aug. 16 (CNA) Taiwan's Navy indicated Monday that it was in the process of carrying out maintenance work on its AAV7 amphibious assault vehicles in preparation for disaster relief operations during the current rainy season.
The Navy posted seven photos on its Facebook page, showing military maintenance crews checking and reinstalling an AAV7 engine, inspecting other components of the vehicles, and repairing metal parts.
On its website, the Navy says Taiwan currently has 54 AAV7s, which are often used for disaster relief missions, such as the evacuation of residents in high-risk areas during typhoons and floods, and also for amphibious landing exercises.
The AAV7s were recently deployed to rural areas in central and southern Taiwan, which were hit by flash floods caused by heavy rains.
According to military websites, the AAV7 can carry 28 people, including its crew, and travel at a speed of 32 kilometers per hour off-road, 72 km per hour on surfaced roads, and 13 km per hour in water.
Equipped with composite armor plates, a grenade launcher and a machine gun, it is commonly used by the United States and its allies to transport amphibious troops, according to the websites.
